Godwin, Jane, 1964- (author.). Walker, Anna, (illustrator.).

Summary:

"With three older brothers to pass along hand-me-downs, Sadie doesn't have much say in choosing her clothes. Her outfits always look interesting, though (even if some kids at school might not think so). But Sadie is allowed to pick her shoes, so one day she buys the most beautiful shoes ever -- shoes that sparkle in the sun, shoes she wears everywhere. That is, until Sadie and her brothers hop down a creek on an adventure, and one shoe falls off and is swept away. Whatever will Sadie do with one silver shoe?"--publishers website.

As the youngest of four children, Sadie is accustomed to inheriting her siblings' hand-me-downs. It's no wonder that her prize possession is a pair of sparkly silver sneakers that were bought just for her. Sadie proudly sports them on all her adventures, until one of the shoes gets lost in a comic-yet-tragic misstep. She continues wearing the remaining shoe, but what do you do with just one shoe? Will she ever be reunited with her other sparkly sneaker? Walker's charming watercolor and collage illustrations will sweep readers along from the beginning to the surprising end. Younger siblings will especially appreciate the thrill of owning something that hasn't been passed down from an older child, and all kids will understand the sting of loss as well as the joy of being reunited. The seemingly simple premise leads to a heartfelt lesson on the merits of individuality, the serendipity of unexpected connections, and the joy that a simple sparkly shoe can bring.--Emily Graham Copyright 2019 Booklist

PreS-Gr 2-Little Sadie is the younger sister of three brothers and the recipient of multiple hand-me-downs. Because the only clothes she chooses for herself are underwear and shoes, her dearest possession is a pair of sparkly silver shoes. During a fun-filled family picnic, she follows her brothers across a rock-filled stream, and one of her new, just-a-bit-large shoes escapes with the fish into the wild. With minimal use of pen and scenes of collage and watercolor, the views of Sadie present her distress over the loss and then emphasize her ability to assert herself as she appears wearing both her favorite silver shoe and one of another color. Readers can follow the lost shoe from home to school, through a forested outdoors, across a rocky beach, and luckily right to the side of Sadie's best friend Ellie, the newest student in Sadie's school. Dialogue and text highlight images of children interacting in play and a developing friendship between the girls that encourages them to wear their shoes everywhere-each sporting a single sparkly shoe. This suggested general purchase for all libraries will resonate with young -readers. VERDICT A fun choice for one-on-one and small group sharing.-Mary Elam, Learning -Media Services, Plano ISD, TX © Copyright 2019. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Sadie loses a shoe but finds a friend.Sadie is self-confident, adventurous, and the recipient of her older brothers' outgrown clothes. She likes wearing the hand-me-downs in spite of negative comments from classmate Annabelle. But she can pick out her own shoes, and her new ones are marvelous, silver and sparkly and a bit big so she can wear them longer. She wears them everywhere, even on a family picnic. Sadie and her brothers have fun rock-hopping in a stream until Sadie's shoe comes off and they all get wet trying to retrieve it. Her brothers have some very creative suggestions as to what she can do with the one shoe, but she decides to wear it unmatched, staring down Annabelle. Ellie, a new girl at school, tells her that she recently found one shiny shoe just like Sadie's. Of course it's a match, and Sadie has a wonderful idea. The two girls will share the shoes, and sometimes even wear one each, a perfect match. Godwin's syntax is brief and spare, telling the fast-paced tale without adornment. The text is placed in white space around and within Walker's action-filled, earth-toned watercolor-and-collage vignettes. The illustrations enhance the text beautifully, providing sharp-eyed readers with visual hints of the shoe's movements. The characters, depicted as mostly white, are distinct and expressive.Sadie is terrific. (Picture book. 3-7) Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.

All Sadies clothes are hand-me-downs from her older brotherseverything except her shoes (and underwear). So she loves shoesespecially her new sparkly silver ones that she wears absolutely everywhere. Unfortunately, on an outdoor excursion with her brothers, she falls into a creek and loses one of the shoes; but she loves them so much that she keeps wearing the remaining one, even in the face of scorn from popular Annabelle at school. Then Sadie meets new student Ellie, and it turns out that she has a silver shoe at home just like Sadiesthe very one, in fact, that Sadie lost. Ellie offers to return it, but Sadie has a better idea: theyll share the shoes. Sometimes Sadie wore them, sometimes Ellie wore them, and sometimes they wore one each. This Australian picture book has many charms, one of them being Sadiestheres no other word for itfeisty personality. (Maybe you should have worn old shoes today, says Mom. I know that now, shouts Sadie; Your shoes dont match, says Annabelle. I dont care, says Sadie.) Another is the watercolor and collage art. Colorful vignettes that detail Sadies home and school life alternate with lush full-page or double-page illustrations that show the progress of Sadies lost shoe as it makes its way from creek to ocean to tide pool (where Ellie finds it). A satisfying celebration of individuality, friendship, and footwear fidelity. martha v. Parravano March/April 2019 p 59(c) Copyright 2019.
